WHEN YOUR HEART AND FEELINGS BECOMES YOUR EYES

For some people, and myself, composing an image isn't always an easy task. It can often become an overwhelming process, even after years of practice.

I've been struggling all the way back to my first ever image. I realized early that I needed some basic knowledge of how to frame up an image, so I began reading about composition rules. In the beginning I used them as rules too, always looking for images I could adapt to the rules. I've learned my lesson the hard way now, never let the rules dictate your images! Use them as guidelines, nothing more.

After my big awakening, my photography changed, I now made a lot more images on my forest and woodland walks. Not necessarily images with that big "WOW" feeling,  but at least, I felt more happy, and my inspiration began to grow. As my inspiration grew, so did my creativity, and I soon began to feel something was missing from my images. I still used the composition rules only as guidelines, but it felt like that wasn't enough, like the images wanted to be more...

I had been reading about "finding my own style", and I began to feel that my images didn't stand out in any way, they were just like ordinary images, I didn't "feel" them the way I wanted them to feel. I needed something to change, needed to find something that could bring my images to life. I've always been curious about light and shadows, maybe I could use that to give them life?

Now I try to use the light in my compositions as the main focus and then build my image around that. It's been a work in progress, but I believe I manage to contain more of the moment in my images now than earlier. If You struggle with something similar, maybe my solution can  give You some ideas?
